Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®) Courses
MSP represents proven programme management good practice which can be applied to help organisations deliver transformational change. It is an adaptable route for programme management which links together some key principles, governance themes and a set of processes to assist with business change. It is designed to provide a framework covering the wide variety of disciplines and activities required within a program of any type in any environment.
MSP is a de facto standard used extensively by the UK government and is widely recognised and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally. MSP is based on the experience of scores of programs, program managers and program teams.
The MSP course provides students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the practical application of the MSP framework. Upon completion of the Foundation level students should be comfortable working as part of a programme team. Students who complete the Practitioner level should be comfortable managing programmes using MSP. Students will receive either a certificate in MSP at the Foundation level or MSP Practitioner certificate depending on the course attended.
The course is based on the Managing Successful Programmes manual (2011 edition). The course covers the Principles, Governance Themes and the Transformational Flow of MSP. Participants will apply the MSP theory against a case study during the course to help build confidence in their use of the framework.
Participants will work through the program lifecycle from identifying a program to proper closure of the program. During this journey they will consider all key aspects of the MSP framework including:
- Identifying a Programme
- Setting the Programme Vision
- Developing a Business Case
- Defining a Programme
- Managing the Tranches
- Realising the Benefits
- Managing Risks and Issues
- Structuring the Programme Organisation
- Delivering the Capability
- Creating a Blueprint
- Quality Management
- Closing a Programme
This course will also include a section on procurement management as described in the PMBOK Guide®. The procurement management section will outline how to plan, conduct, administer and close procurements.
This is an open course with no pre-requisite qualifications. Any experience in project or programme teams would be beneficial.
To achieve the MSP qualifications, participants will need to successfully complete the relevant exams.
1. MSP Foundation Exam: this is a 40 minute multiple choice exam
2. MSP Practitioner Exam: this is a 2.5 hour Objective Test Exam
Participants must pass the Foundation exam before proceeding to the Practitioner exam.
